Is A Canister Or Upright The Best Choice?

Canister Vs Upright VacuumWhen it comes time to buy a new vacuum cleaner you will likely be faced with the choice of deciding between a canister or an upright. Both have their advantages and perform best under certain cleaning circumstances. To help you decide on the right vacuum we have put together a couple of lists of the pros and cons of each type.

Canister Pros

  • Easy to maneuver around your home and flexible hose gives greater versatility
  • Easy to push as the head is lightweight as opposed to the entire unit on an upright
  • Best design for allergy sufferers as hepa sealed systems are now available
  • Low profile for vacuuming underneath furniture
  • Great for multiple floor types like hardwoods, tile, carpets, and linoleum
  • Lightweight and easy to carry up and down stairs
  • Most come with a retractable electric cord

Upright Pros

  • On bagged models the bags are usually larger than on canisters
  • Easy to use in large, open areas which don't require moving around furniture
  • Vacuum cleaner is one big unit which is always in front when vacuuming. Some people prefer this design.

Canister Cons

  • The unit is usually behind you which you have to pull around the room. This can be awkward if you aren't used to it.
  • These vacuums might require more lifting than uprights when moving between floor types.

Upright Cons

  • Can't get under furniture very easy.
  • Not as maneuverable as a canister vacuum as the wheels are fixed in a straight line (except for the Dyson Ball).
  • Most don't have a retractable electrical cord.
  • Usually heavier than canisters so they are more difficult to use on stairs.
  • Sometimes the brushroll or beater bar can damage delicate floors or carpets.
  • Hose is typically short and stiff making it hard to extend way out.

While we are biased towards canister vacuums and feel they are the best cleaners for the majority of households, there are times when an upright is a great choice. By understanding the main differences between these two types you can feel confident in buying the right vacuum cleaner for your home.
